Season's Over

It is all over folks. The DreamTeam Grand Finals have been played and now it is time for finals DT. Unfortunately nowadays I'm restricted on time, so the website won't really be provided coverage for news on the finals. But don't forget the name as we'll, no doubt, have something up our sleeve for DT 2010.

Stevie Johnson Update For Finals DT

Geelong have revealed gun forward Steve Johnson is hoping to return to the Cats side for the finals after undergoing arthroscopy on his hip today.

Johnson has been battling the problem since about midway through the season, but Geelong claim he will rehabilitate the injury with the aim to be available for the finals series.

“Steve was hampered by the injury and it deteriorated after the game in Sydney. The procedure will give Steve the best chance to return and play at the level that we are used to,” Geelong general manager of football operations Neil Balme said.

“Without the surgery it is unlikely he could have played through the finals as it had deteriorated to the point that he could not play without significant pain and restricted movement.”

All this is relevant for DT because, of course, you can sign up for finals DT which will obviously involve Geelong players.

Johnson 90% Chance To Return

Geelong's gun forward Stevie Johnson should return this week much to the relief of many anxious DreamTeam coaches ahead of the DT GF.

Johnson has been struggling with a hip problem for the last couple of months and has missed a fair chunk of footy.

But Geelong coach Mark Thompson said on Tuesday, "More than likely Steve will play, he'd be a 90 per cent chance to play this week, again, we'll have to see how he pulls up."

Johnson's inclusion could be crucial for DT coaches' forward lines, with his Geelong teammate Paul Chapman doubtful to play this weekend with a hamstring worry.

Thompson admitted they hadn't made a decision yet on Chapman although scans showed very little damage.

Around The Grounds

  • Gun St Kilda forward Nick Riewoldt has been cleared to play this weekend after scans revealed no damage to his knee. The scan revealed mild jarring of the knee which is likely to be fine for the Saints clash with Melbourne on Sunday.
  • Essendon pair Patty Ryder (knee) and Matty Lloyd (heel) are both a chance to play this weekend against the Hawks, but they're facing a race against time. Bombers coach Matty Knights said, "Both are progressing well but on Thursday and Friday they're going to have to push and put the foot to the floor with their intensity on the training track."
  • Brisbane key forward Daniel Bradshaw will miss the DT GF after straining a quad muscle. Lions teammate Luke Power said, "He's pulled up a bit tight and sore and we just needed to give him a week off and get him cherry ripe for next week." Also Daniel Merrett will miss this week with a hamstring.
  • Adelaide defender Nathan Bock will miss this weekend's match with his nagging heel problem. Crows assistant coach Ben Hart said, "Nathan did a little bit of training this morning, but there’s still a bit of soreness hanging around. His heel is not good enough to train tomorrow, so we’ll give him probably until Monday and re-assess then."

Buddy Doubt After MRP Verdict

Superstar and popular DT forward Lance Franklin could miss Round 22 after being handed a one-week suspension by the match review panel.

Franklin was charged with engaging in rough conduct after a hit on Richmond's Ben Cousins and the Hawk can accept a one-match ban.

It'll be a huge blow for plenty of DreamTeam coaches heading into the Grand Final, with forwards options depleted after injuries to Steve Johnson, Paul Chapman, Mitch Brown and maybe even Nick Riewoldt.

The Hawks look likely to challenge the decision leaving the door open for a late reprieve.

Also, Hawthorn have updated the status of Jaryd Roughead on their injury list to TBC, suggesting he could be a chance to play in this weekend's do-or-die match with the Bombers.

Riewoldt To Miss DT GF?

St Kilda's gun forward Nick Riewoldt could be unavailable for the DreamTeam Grand Final due to a knee problem.

Riewoldt, a hugely popular DT player, had scans on his knee on Monday after hurting it in Sunday's loss to St Kilda.

The Saints star said, "It's pulled up a little sore this morning, so at this stage of the year they wanted to be really diligent.

"My knee feels really good and I obviously don't know the result of the scan yet, but I'd be very, very surprised if it was anything at all. I'm walking fine, so I just wanted to put that [speculation about my knee] to bed."

Around The Grounds

  • Adelaide pair Nathan Bock (heel) and Brett Burton (corked glute) could return for the Crows this week and, of course, the DT Grand Final. Adelaide's Jason Porplyzia said today, "It’d be great to have 'Bocky' and 'Bird' [Burton] back, if not this week, for the first final." Rob Shirley though, has been ruled out with a hamstring injury.
  • Essendon livewire forward Alwyn Davey will miss the DT GF with a shoulder injury. Essendon footy manager Paul Hamilton said, "The results confirmed that Alwyn has a grade three injury to his shoulder which is fairly severe." The injury is a 2-4 week injury.
  • Sydney forward Jarred Moore will also be unavailable for the DT GF after puncturing a lung and breaking 2 ribs. Fellow Swan Ryan O'Keefe said, "It’s a bit unlucky for Jarred. He would have loved to play in the game on Saturday night."

Hayes Ready To Return

Popular Saints DT midfielder Lenny Hayes is likely to return just in time for the fantasy Grand Final.

Hayes missed the weekend's loss to North Melbourne as a late withdrawal.

The Saints midfielder said, "I’ll be right next weekend. I had a little bit of illness later in the week so I was probably a little bit touch and go up until the start of the game."

Luke Ball also might be a chance of a recall after good VFL form.

Hayes added, "He showed some good form for Sandy so I would like to see him back in the team but that’s not my decision. We’ll wait and see what happens at selection."

DT Round 21 Injury & Suspension News

Fremantle v Essendon: Bomber Sam Lonergan was a late withdrawal. Jarrod Atkinson injured his calf in Q4, while Alwyn Davey looked to have sustained a nasty shoulder injury late on too.

Collingwood v Sydney: It seems like Jarred Moore badly hurt his ribs in Q2.

St Kilda v North Melbourne: Saints midfielder Lenny Hayes is the worry as he was a late change.

Richmond v Hawthorn: no changes but Tigers defender Will Thursfield seemed to dislocate his shoulder early on. Ben Cousins got cleaned up late and missed Q4, while Chris Newman's knee restricted his output.

Brisbane Lions v Port Adelaide: Port's Robbie Gray was a late withdrawal. Cheynee Stiller got knocked out and was gone, while Daniel Merrett limped around for awhile with an ankle complaint.

Adelaide v West Coast: Crows onballer Rob Shirley did his hammy in Q3 and finished up for the game.

Carlton v Melbourne: Carlton's Dennis Armfield (ankle) was a late change. Ricky Petterd was mothballed early with a groin complaint. Also Carlton's Richard Hadley suffered an arm injury and was taken to hospital. Reportedly x-rays have confirmed it is a broken ulna which will require immobilisation suggesting his season is year.

Western Bulldogs v Geelong: Worryingly for DT coaches Paul Chapman missed pretty much half the game with hamstring tightness and it's not clear if he'll play in Round 22.

Chapman Will Play Next Week: Thompson

Geelong coach Mark Thompson is optimistic gun forward Paul Chapman will get over an injury scare from Friday's loss to the Bulldogs and play in Round 22.

Chapman is a popular DT player who many coaches own and his availability for Round 22, Grand Final week in the world of DreamTeam, is crucial.

Thompson said, “I think Paul Chapman will play next week and I think James Kelly will play next week and Brad Ottens will play in the VFL tomorrow night and hopefully he has a great game and gets through and we put him in the team."

The Geelong boss also spoke about another popular Cats forward, "Then Steve Johnson plays and we are up and about."

Adcock Back For Round 22?

DreamTeam coaches who hung onto Brisbane's Jed Adcock might be in for some luck with the defender a chance to play in Round 22.

Adcock will play in the AFLQ this weekend after suffering a seemingly season-ending knee injury six weeks ago. And if Adcock gets through that match, Brisbane may give him a run in Round 22.

Lions coach Michael Voss said, "We toyed with playing him back in seniors but we think realistically to give him the best chance to come back is probably better through reserves.

"You should see Jed. He's going to rip a few people's heads off at the moment."

Robinson Gone For Year

Carlton's popular $193k back-up midfielder Mitch Robinson has been ruled out for the rest of the season with a stress fracture in his foot.

Robinson, who is owned by over 22,000 DT coaches, has succumbed to the troublesome injury.

Carlton coach Brett Ratten said today, "We found out late yesterday that his season was finished.

"He's had it for a little bit. He's had some signs there that he was sore in his feet, but it really raised it's head after the [Port] game."

Around The Grounds

--- Collingwood's $341k ruckman Josh Fraser is set to return to AFL footy after a knee injury. Pies onballer Dayne Beams said about Fraser (who is owned by over 23,000 DT coaches), “Josh got through training today and I think his knee’s pretty good. He’ll be up for selection this week and Pebs (Anthony Rocca) played another game in the VFL on Sunday and got through well and played well."

--- Despite reports to the contrary yesterday, there's some good news from Essendon about Dustin Fletcher and Patty Ryder. Bombers coach Matthew Knights said, "With Dustin, it looks like being better than first thought. The scans look like they're clear, and we'll assess him as the week goes on." Knights added about Ryder, "It's also better than we first thought. I think he's strained or hurt a popliteus [muscle] behind the knee, but he's going to be shorter rather than longer as well, preferably one week, but maybe two or three."

--- North Melbourne's $309k midfielder Daniel Wells has admitted his injury-plagued season is officially over with osteitis pubis his last problem. Wells told kangaroos.com.au, "There are only two games to go but thinking about it, I tried really hard to get back and play but it wasn't to be. That's it for the rest of the year."

--- Geelong's gun $466k forward Paul Chapman should be available for this weekend's clash with the Bulldogs after he was taken off the club's injury list. James Kelly (hamstring), Darren Milburn (ankle), David Wojcinski (ankle) and Max Rooke (knee) will all face tests while Travis Varcoe has been ruled out for 3-4 weeks with a shoulder injury.

--- The Western Bulldogs have revealed $352k midfielder Ryan Griffen will miss two weeks with a hamstring problem. Also Tom Williams (foot) will miss 2, while Daniel Cross (ankle) still another but Shaun Higgins should return, while Dan Giansiracusa is fit, but will come back via the VFL. Also Rob Murphy & Brad Johnson should be okay for this weekend despite picking up corked thighs in Brisbane.

DT Round 20 Movers & Shakers

With the finals well and truly underway this week's Movers & Shakers update will take on a newlook. I've revised it all down, as I'm sure most of those DT coaches who are still in the running aren't thinking too much about the future and focusing on the now. Anyway, speaking of the now, right now I'm back and updating the site so check it all out, including the injury list on the sidebar which is all fresh. Anyway to the DT footy.

For Adelaide, ruck/forward Kurt Tippett drops down $15k to $285k after a score of 40. I'm a fan of Tippett and if you need another ruckman he might be worth a punt.

For Hawthorn, gun forward Lance Franklin still represents great value after a score of 93, he's down $8k to a very affordable $329k.

For Collingwood, premium midfielder Dane Swan (125) is sliding into nice value just in time for the GF down $10k to $474k which is still ridiculous but better than before, with a BE of 144 next week.

For Richmond, not much going on there although Shane Tuck is okay value following a score of 68 he's down $33k to $370k.

For West Coast, midfielder Matt Priddis remains solid value after posting 106 he's up slightly $1k to $354k which is a good price for a consistent player.

For North Melbourne, big ruckman Hamish McIntosh is at an affordable price having scored 72, down $16k to $346k.

For the Western Bulldogs, two players worth a look are defender Ryan Hargrave (71) down $27k to $345k and forward Robert Murphy (90) down $13k to $333k.

For the Brisbane Lions, midfielder Luke Power is another consistent gun going at a nice price, with a score of 81 taking him down a small $2k to $347k.

For Geelong, if you're up for a punt get on a cheap, but slightly injured, Stevie Johnson (79) who's perhaps regaining form down $25k at an affordable $337k.

For Sydney, forward Ryan O'Keefe has slid after a peaking out and following a score of 104 he's down $23k to a juicy price of $390k.

For Melbourne, small forward Aaron Davey remains lovely value after a score of 119, he's up $4k to an extremely affordable $320k. Worth a punt?

For Fremantle, a nice one is ruckman Aaron Sandilands who posted 95 on the weekend yet drops $12k to $368k which is really affordable especially considering his upcoming opponents, Essendon, are short on rucks this week.

For Carlton, skipper Chris Judd is probably the best player in the comp yet is pretty cheap in DT world, down $4k to $336k after a score of 86 this week. He's a risk-free good thing, if you're looking to consolidate a finals win.

For Port Adelaide, midfielder Dom Cassisi is one who could be useful addition after a score of 41, he's down $47k to an affordable $332k. Tempting.

For Essendon, young back Jarrod Atkinson could be one worth a punt after a score of 82 he stays at $179k after 2 games. If you need to take a risk, perhaps a downgrade to Atkinson in defence, could generate some cash for a gun elsewhere. Not a bad idea after his game on the weekend.

Finally for St Kilda, defender Brendon Goddard is a DT must and if you haven't got him, he's down $11k to $408k after a score of 66 on the weekend with a BE of 159 next week. Get on fast.

Bock Gone For DT09?

Adelaide's popular $368k defender Nathan Bock could miss the rest of the DreamTeam season with a heel troubling him.

Crows footy manager John Reid said about Bock, who is owned by almost 16,000 DT coaches, “Nathan’s improving. By about this stage next week we might be able to see how the injury’s going and he might be able to have a light run.

“On the good end, Nathan could be available for the Carlton game [in round 22], but on the bad end he might play none [of the remaining games].”

Brett Burton will miss this weekend's clash with West Coast having aggravated a corked buttock in training, while Pat Dangerfield (back) and Dave Mackay (knee) should return to training midweek and will be in the mix for selection.

Also $86k def/fwd Shaun McKernan is expected to return from a broken arm via the SANFL this weekend and could be a handy addition if he plays AFL in Round 22.

Eagles Confirm Brown's Season Over

West Coast have made it official popular $230k forward Mitch Brown will miss the rest of the AFL season with a foot injury.

Brown, who is a handy back-up forward owned by over 41,000 DT coaches, hurt the metatarsal bone in his foot early in West Coast's Saturday win over North Melbourne.

The Eagles haven't made an official statement to the media but in the club's online media release for Monday, Brown's name was listed with the word season next to it.

Along with Brown, $281k mid Chris Masten has also been ruled out for the rest of the season with a knee injury while $294k mid Brad Ebert should be okay after a heavy hit to his chest late on the weekend.

MRP Update: Swan & Johnson Avoid Bans

Good news for DT coaches deep into the finals with popular pair Dane Swan and Stevie Johnson both not facing bans after the match review panel met on Monday.

Swan, a $474k midfielder owned by almost 55,000 DT coaches, was cited for engaging in a melee for the third time in his career but will only face a hefty fine of $3000 (with an early plea) rather than a suspension.

Johnson, a $337k forward owned by over 68,000 DT coaches, was in hot water for striking Sydney's Craig Bolton, but only drew 80 demerit points thus a reprimand, and that will be even lighter with an early plea.

Other reports include, Richmond's Jake King who can accept a two-match ban for striking Alan Didak. Also Tom Hislop can cop a one-match suspension for striking Shane O'Bree.

There were also fines for a huge list of Tigers and Magpies, including DT guns Brett Deledio, Heath Shaw, Tarkyn Lockyer and Dayne Beams, but an lighter wallet won't effect their DT output.

Also there was couple of incidents of contact between players which were assessed but waved away with players including, Alan Didak, Mark Coughlan, Travis Cloke, Luke McGuane, Cam Mooney, Ryan O'Keefe, Jonathon Brown, Brian Lake and Nick Maxwell.

Ryder Out For 3 Weeks

Popular Essendon $323k defender Paddy Ryder will miss the rest of the DreamTeam season due to a 3 week knee injury sustained on the weekend.

Ryder, who is owned by almost 50,000 DT coaches, injured the muscle behind his knee late in the Bombers' thrilling win over St Kilda on Sunday.

"There was some concern that Paddy had sustained ligament damage so we are happy to learn his injury isn't anything more serious," Essendon footy operations manager Paul Hamilton said.

"Unfortunately he will miss at least a couple of weeks as the muscle behind his knee heals which is obviously a blow for the side."

There was other injury news from Windy Hill today, with $224k defender Courtenay Dempsey ruled out for 2 weeks with a hamstring injury. $307k defender Dustin Fletcher has been cleared of any serious damage to his hamstring, but is in doubt for the weekend's match with Freo, while Bachar Houli will miss the rest of the season with a fractured fibula.

DT Round 20 Injury & Suspension News

Okay folks, back on track after my holiday. With the DT finals well and truly underway it's the right time to get back into the news on the blog, so hopefully I can help you out as the season whinds down. Personally, I missed the finals, finished 10th in my league, so was put into the minor finals and had a win last week. Big time huh? Well it would be nice to win something this year, so I'll have a crack. Anyway to the news.

Essendon v St Kilda: Kyle Reimers (general soreness) was a late change, while there were leg injuries to Bombers defenders Patrick Ryder (right knee), Courtenay Dempsey (hamstring) and Dustin Fletcher (hamstring), while Brent Stanton (hip/quad) and Jobe Watson (thigh) had minor issues.

Port Adelaide v Carlton: Port's Jacob Surjan and Carlton's Shaun Hampson both withdrew late. Port's Josh Carr injured his ankle badly too.

Melbourne v Fremantle: no injury worries.

Sydney v Geelong: Jared Crouch (corked thigh) dropped out late. Luke Ablett hyperextended his knee. Geelong's Travis Varcoe injured his AC joint.

Brisbane Lions v Western Bulldogs: Ryan Griffen was a late withdrawal with a hamstring worry.

West Coast v North Melbourne: Mitch Brown got injured and missed most of the match with a suspected fractured metatarsal. Chris Masten was also injured with a suspected PCL strain in his knee. Also Brad Ebert copped a heavy blow to his ribcage in Q4 but was running on the sidelines.

Richmond v Collingwood: Matt White (hamstring) dropped out and Mark Coughlan came in. Jake King & Tom Hislop got reported. Collingwood's Brad Dick badly hurt his shoulder late.

Hawthorn v Adelaide: Hawks bigman Rob Campbell hurt his hand and seemed to have to get a finger popped back in. Also Luke Hodge had a bit of hamstring tightness and with the Hawks season virtually over, it will interesting to see if he plays out the year.

McVeigh's Season Over?

Sydney midfielder Jarrad McVeigh may not play again this season after a pulling a hamstring in Sunday's win over Richmond.

Swans coach Paul Roos said, "He’s had a little bit of a problem with it over the past month and he missed that one game.

"It’d be possible that you wouldn’t see him again this year.

"I mean we’ll try to rehab it [but] I don’t know, they’re normally two to three weeks."

DT Round 19 Injury & Suspension News

Here's a cheeky update for you all, as I catch up on some AFL footy whilst on holiday. I should be able to get some good info up on the site in the next 24 hours, so have a look. Anyway, first of all here is the rundown of news on the topic of injuries and suspensions from the weekend.

Fremantle v Port Adelaide: Port's Jacob Surjan benched after Q2 with a corked thigh. Hamish Hartlett struggled with a back injury during the game and you wonder about his fitness for the rest of the year.

Richmond v Sydney: The man with the dodgiest hamstring in the land, Jarrad McVeigh pulled his hammy today. Also ruckman Darren Jolly has an AC joint worry.

North Melbourne v Melbourne: For the Dees, Jared Rivers was a late change. For North, Josh Gibson hurt his thumb & Hamish McIntosh's output was hurt by a back problem in Q1, but both should be OK for next week. While Cam Bruce's output was down due to a wrist concern. Youngster Rohan Bail injured his thigh in the warm-up, but played and then was mothballed. Odd one.

Adelaide v Collingwood: Brett Burton copped a 'badly corked buttock' and sat on the pine. Doesn't look too good for him.

Essendon v Brisbane Lions: no major injury worries, although Bomber Kyle Reimers limped off in Q4 but returned.

Hawthorn v St Kilda: Big news here with late changes, as for the Hawks, Brad Sewell (quad) was a late withdrawal and for the Saints, Nick Dal Santo (illness) & Sam Fisher (general soreness) were late changes. James Gwilt got reported, while Jarryd Roughead had a worrying thigh problem in Q4.

Western Bulldogs v West Coast: For the Dogs, Liam Picken was a late change. For the Eagles, Adam Selwood copped a knock to the knee but should be okay.

Carlton v Geelong: For the Blues, Mark Austin was a late withdrawal. For Geelong, there were bad ankle injuries for David Wojcinski and Darren Milburn while Cam Mooney got concussed and will touch-and-go for next week.

I'm Off On Holiday

Sorry folks, for the next or week I'll be out of the office, out of town and out on holiday.

Thus the blog won't be providing such in-depth news and updates until I get back on Friday August 14. In the meantime I will provide our authentic updates, ie.News from the Reserves, Movers & Shakers etc. But not much breaking news.

I know it's not the best time to head off on holiday, with DT finals kicking off, but you should be fine without me. All the best in the meantime.
